Fall is my favorite season! And one of the reasons is the clothes: the deeper colors, the return of layers, the cozy socks, and the chance to, once again, pull out my beloved ankle boots.
But living in Texas means that fall dressing has to be practical. September and October can still be quite warm, so I’ve learned that creating a fall wardrobe isn’t necessarily about wearing heavy clothes. It’s about choosing lighter layers, richer colors, and classic pieces that you can mix and match as the weather changes.
For these outfits, I started with a small collection of basics. Then, I created ten simple outfit formulas that you can replicate. But the possibilities don’t stop there; these pieces can be mixed and matched in many more combinations.
Most clothing items I’m linking to are from Quince, a brand I’m drawn to for its high-quality, classic style and affordable prices. Each item is super soft, and all have stretch, even the silk tank and jeans.
However, I do have a few from Amazon and Nordstrom as well.
However, think of these outfits as formulas rather than an exact shopping list, since you may already have similar pieces in your closet. And whatever you don’t have, you can easily recreate the same looks with pieces from another retailer that fits your budget and preferences.
A quick note: Some of the links in this article are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. I’ve chosen each piece because it works with the outfit formulas shown here, whether it comes from Quince, Amazon, or another retailer.
A Few of My Style Principles
Keep the Color Palette Simple
You’ll notice that everything here is a solid color. That’s intentional.
Solid colors make it much easier to mix and match a small wardrobe, and there’s something wonderfully chic about a simple color palette.
If an all-solid wardrobe sounds boring, think of these pieces as your foundation, not your entire wardrobe. Once you have a simple base, it's easy to add your favorite striped top, patterned scarf, plaid blazer, or printed blouse without making the wardrobe hard to coordinate.
Choose Comfort Without Giving Up Style
As a woman in my late 50s, comfort has become one of my highest priorities.
I’m no longer willing to spend a day uncomfortable simply because something is trendy or because someone said it would make me look younger.
I want to dress for the woman I am now.
That means clothes that feel comfortable, allow me to move easily, and provide enough coverage that I don’t have to spend the day pulling, tugging, or adjusting anything.
But comfortable doesn’t have to mean careless. I still want to look classic, elegant, pulled together, and confidently my age.
Pay Attention to Proportion
One of the easiest ways to make simple clothes look polished is to pay attention to proportion—an outfit needs to have a shape to it.
For example, when I wear wide-leg pants or jeans, I usually choose a smaller or more streamlined top. When I wear something looser on top, I often choose a straighter pant underneath.
There are exceptions, of course. I'll show you one below in outfit #4.
Balance Texture and Detail
Another small design rule I use is to balance textures within an outfit.
For example, if a sweater or fabric already has an interesting texture or woven pattern, I usually keep the jewelry smoother and simpler.
On the other hand, when I’m wearing simple, smooth pieces—a plain tee or silk tank—I choose subtly textured earrings or other accessories.
The idea is simple: Don’t make every part of the outfit compete for attention.
If one element has texture, I let the others become quieter.
How to Make These Outfit Formulas Work for You
The pieces I’ve chosen reflect my climate, my coloring, and the way I like to dress. Your version doesn’t need to look exactly like mine.
That’s the beauty of an outfit formula.
Adjust the Fabrics for Your Climate
The fabric weights I've chosen make sense for living in a warmer climate.
If you live somewhere colder, keep the same formulas — but increase the warmth of the individual pieces.
A lightweight cardigan could become a heavier wool cardigan. A tee could become a turtleneck. And the lightweight sweater could become cashmere or merino wool.
In warmer climates, as I had said earlier, fall dressing is less about heavy clothing and more about lighter layers and autumn colors.
That’s why you see lightweight cream and olive sweaters in my capsule wardrobe, along with a thin silk tank in burgundy. They feel like fall without requiring truly cold weather.
Choose a Color Palette That Flatters You
Black is one of my best core neutrals because I have relatively high-contrast coloring. However, black doesn’t have to be yours.
If your coloring is softer, you might build the same wardrobe around slacks that are navy, brown, or camel instead of black. Then, choose either navy or brown shoes instead of black.
The same goes for accent colors. Mine are burgundy and olive because I enjoy wearing them and they work well with my coloring.
Yours might be muted rose, sage, rust — or whatever shades make you feel most like yourself.
The formulas stay the same. Only the palette changes.
10 Simple Classic Fall Outfit Formulas
Outfit 1: Wide-Leg Jeans + White Scoop or V-Neck Tee + Olive Cardigan Sweater + Black Flats or Loafers + Gold Hoops

A white V-neck tee and dark-wash jeans are about as simple as it gets, but adding an olive cardigan and gold hoops makes the combination feel more like fall.
This is a good example of how fall dressing can work in a warmer climate. Nothing here is particularly heavy; the season comes primarily through color and layering.
Style tip: For an elegant look, always choose the darker wash with your jeans.
Outfit 2: Black Straight-Leg Pants + White Scoop or V-Neck Tee + Camel Duster Sweater + Black Flats or Loafers + Gold Croissant Hoops

This is essentially the same idea taken one step more polished. The white tee keeps the outfit relaxed, while the black trousers and camel duster give it structure.
I especially like the contrast of camel against black and white. It’s classic, uncomplicated, and looks intentional without appearing overly dressed.
Because the clothing itself is smooth and simple, the croissant hoops add just enough texture to make the outfit feel more finished.
Outfit 3: Black Straight-Leg Pants + Burgundy Silk Tank + Camel Duster Sweater + Black Boots + Diamond (or faux diamond) Studs

One of the easiest ways to get more from a small wardrobe is to keep the foundation of an outfit and simply change a few details.
Here, I’ve taken the previous combination of black pants and a camel duster and made it feel much more polished by swapping the white tee for a burgundy silk tank, the flats for black ankle boots, and the gold hoops for diamond—or faux diamond—studs.
The silhouette stays simple, but the silk, the richer colored tank, the heeled boots, and the diamond studs immediately make the outfit feel more appropriate for a fall dinner out.
That’s one of the things I love most about classic pieces: you can easily dress them up or down.
Outfit 4: Wide-Leg Jeans + Loose Lightweight Cream Sweater + Black Flats or Loafers + Gold Hoops

The cream sweater is lightweight enough for a warmer day, while the color and knit texture still feel seasonal.
Because both the sweater and jeans have some volume, I would give the sweater a small French tuck at the front rather than leaving the entire top loose. That one detail helps define the waist and keeps the outfit from feeling shapeless.
And because the sweater already has visible texture, I’d keep the earrings smooth and simple. Plain gold hoops are enough.
Outfit 5: Black Wide-Leg Cropped Pants + Loose Lightweight Cream Sweater + Ankle Boots + Gold Hoops

Take that same cream sweater in the previous outfit, pair it with cropped black pants and ankle boots, and you have a dressier version.
Style Tip 1: With cropped pants and ankle boots, I prefer the pants to overlap the top of the boot rather than leaving a strip of bare leg between them. It creates a cleaner, longer line, and it's more appropriate for fall.
Style Tip 2: I’d keep the jewelry smooth because the sweater already brings texture to the outfit.
Outfit 6: Wide-Leg Jeans + Olive Scoop or V-Neck Tee + Black Duster Sweater + Ankle Boots + Silver Croissant Hoops

Olive green is one of my favorite fall colors because it acts almost like a neutral.
Paired with dark denim and black, it creates a richer, moodier color palette without relying on prints.
The V-neck or scoop tee and long duster elongate your silhouette, while the silver croissant hoops add texture and interest against otherwise simple, solid pieces.
Outfit 7: Black Wide-Leg Cropped Pants + Black Scoop or V-Neck Tee + Camel Duster Sweater + Black Flats or Loafers + Gold Hoops

A nearly monochromatic black base with a longer overlay piece creates an elongated look, making it highly flattering to all silhouettes.
This formula is especially useful because you can recreate it with almost any two neutrals you love: navy and camel, chocolate and cream, or gray and black.
Outfit 8: Black Straight-Leg Pants + Burgundy Silk Tank + Black Duster Sweater + Black Flats or Loafers + Diamond (or faux diamond) Studs

The burgundy silk tank gives the outfit richness, while the black duster and straight-leg pants elongate the look.
This could be worn when you want to feel nicely dressed without looking overly formal.
Outfit 9: Black Straight-Leg Pants + Olive Scoop or V-Neck Tee + Olive Cardigan + Black Flats or Loafers + Silver Croissant Hoops

The black straight-leg pants plus the more form-fitting olive top and olive cardigan create a flattering look.
I especially like this formula for an ordinary fall day when you want to feel put together without being overdressed.
Outfit 10: Black Wide-Leg Cropped Pants + Burgundy Silk Tank + Black Duster Sweater + Ankle Boots + Diamond (or faux diamond) Studs

And finally, the dressiest version.
The silk burgundy tank and black duster can move easily from a polished daytime outfit into something that can be worn into the evening.
And it works in the opposite direction too.
To make this combination more casual, I could replace the silk tank with a white or black tee and trade the diamond studs for simple gold or silver hoops.
Simple Clothes, Worn Well
The older I get, the less interested I am in having a closet full of clothes simply for the sake of having choices.
What I want are pieces I enjoy wearing—comfortable clothes that fit well, work together, and make getting dressed feel uncomplicated.
Simplicity is elegance.
